African Schools - Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools near Nakura, Kenya
Whom does gefa serve?
GEFA operates in very poor neighborhoods near Nakuru, Kenya. Residents here are mostly members of the Kikuyu tribe. Most of them are refugees from tribal clashes and victims of political neglect or oppression. An agricultural tribe, they have been forced off of their ancestral farms, have had family members murdered by the government, and are denied government services and jobs. Their children, who would love nothing more than to go to school, are working diligently to learn from their compassionate teachers. Those who cannot afford school are often found looking through the schoolyard fence, a lack of funds their only obstacle.
Family Struggles
Families struggle or are unable to pay the school fees. Unemployment is very high and means of subsistence from the dry earth is very meager. AIDS is wiping out a large portion of today's parents, leaving their children to next of kin, usually grandmothers. In these circumstances, feeding, housing and clothing one's family take priority over education.

school conditions
Unlike American schools, theirs are not federally funded and have no local tax revenue support. Families are required to pay tuition and even basic services, such as a desk fee. Also, their schools have no library, no jungle gym, no grass playing fields, no plumbing, no safe drinking water, no electricity, no computers, no audio-visual department, no buses, no art supplies, no musical instruments. Yet some of these students are highly motivated to perform well academically. For many of these children, going to school is just a dream. By sponsoring a child, you can be proud to be a part of making that dream a reality.
